Austin, TX — About 67% of Americans, or roughly 211 million people, play video games on at least one type of device,
with more than half of those who game play on multiple platforms, according to a new study released
by Electronic Entertainment Design and Research. More than three-quarters of gamers surveyed report that video
games provide them with mental stimulation (79%) as well as relaxation and stress relief (78%). And the role of video
games in the American family is also changing, as nearly three-quarters (74%) of parents believe video games can be
educational for their children, and more than half (57%) enjoy playing games with their child at least weekly. As the
leading form of entertainment today, video games are an integral part of American culture. While video game play may
be seen as simply a recreational or intellectually lacking activity, such play actually can strengthen a range of cognitive
skills such as spatial navigation, recall, reasoning, memory, learning, and perception, and eye-hand coordination.
A-GPC has been proven to benefit cognitive performance, and is a potent, all-natural, highly bioavailable precursor of
phospholipid-bound choline, which is quickly converted to acetylcholine, the primary neurotransmitter compound in the
parasympathetic nervous system. As such, it is involved in all facets of memory and brain function, as well as initiating
muscle contraction and movement. As the popularity of video game play and collegiate and professional esports
increases, along with contests and financial incentives associated with video gaming, it was opportune to investigate the
effects of A-GPC supplement interventions on video game performance.
In this university study, 13 participants (10 male, 3 female, 22.7 + 2.2 years of age) ingested 7 days of supplement (A-
GPC; AlphaSize ® A-GPC, providing 300 mg A-GPC in a 4 oz. serv. calorie free sports drink) and a Placebo (PL; 4 oz.
serv. calorie free sports drink), in a randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled, cross-over manner, with a 14 day
wash-out period between supplementation. Following the 7 days of supplementation, participants performed 30 minutes
of Virtual Reality (VR) game play. Prior to VR gaming, mood (Visual Analog Scales for motivation, calmness, focus,
fatigue, vigor, and jitteriness) was measured, and VR game performance (levels completed, attempts per level, time to
complete level) was measured. Data were analyzed using paired samples t-tests.
Results showed that A-GPC supplementation increased the number of levels completed by 24.9%, reduced the number
of attempts per level by 13.8%, and reduced time to complete each level by 0.64%, compared to PL. A-GPC
supplementation indicated a positive trend for Vigor and Focus in comparison to PL. There were no significant changes
in regard to mood or video game behavior in response to A-GPC supplementation, therefore A-GPC did not alter or
impair behavior. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that AlphaSize ® A-GPC supplementation was associated with
some improvements in VR video game performance, and further investigation into optimal A-GPC dosing, timing of
intake, and types of game play might be conducted in the future.
